Moving and handling with people (half day awareness or whole day with practical assessment)

Ideal for the new person joining the health and social sector or those whose role has changed and are now more involved with moving and handling.

Persons attending must be physically fit to participate in the practical aspects of the course and will be required to sign a declaration to reflect this. Appropriate clothing must be worn.

By the end of the day the learner will have an understanding of:

  1. what is meant by moving and handling
  2. Legislation and legal aspects affecting moving and handling
  3. the spine and how it works
  4. how to take care of their backs to minimise injuries
  5. poor practices to be avoided in relation to moving and handling
  6. how to undertake risk assessments prior to moving tasks
  7. how to lift inanimate objects safely
  8. reporting and recording in relation to moving and handling

(1-8 above  can delivered as a stand-alone half day session for good practice in moving inanimate objects)

  1. Equipment/techniques for moving people. Exploring, understanding and practicing a variety of techniques including use of:
  • Hoists
  • Slings
  • Hoists
  • Slide sheets
  • Sit to stand
  • Stand Aids

All equipment will be  explored in context of the relevant legislation and regulation and training will  include maintenance of equipment, how to ensure appropriate and safe equipment for individuals and importance of care/support plans.

Moving and  handling training is generic and based on ensuring the learners have the knowledge of safe practices – it is important to be aware that this is not a session to provide specific advice relating to the particular individuals supported by those attending the course.
